Learning to pick off runners will help you win the game. You will have an added edge if you watch the game carefully and use your skills to stop runners before they get home. Use these tips to pick a runner of third base in softball.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Throw the ball home if the third base runner is heading home. Throw the ball to third base if the runner has a lead off from third base. The third-baseman may be able to tag the runner.

  2. Step 2

Know what the pitcher is doing. You want to see exactly when the pitcher throws the ball. The third base runner cannot leave the third base until the pitcher throws the ball for the batter.

  3. Step 3

See the batter hit the ball and watch for the ball to come your way. Keep your eye on the third base runner while watching the ball because play will happen quickly.

  4. Step 4

Watch the second base runner in case the runner starts to lead off second base. The runner won't leave the base until the pitcher releases the ball.

  5. Step 5

Catch the ball. Throw it to the third base before the second base runner reaches the base.

  6. Step 6

Tag the runner if the player turns back to the second base. You need to physically touch the runner before they get back to base.

  7. Step 7

Catch a fly ball and throw it to third base to pick a runner off third base. Pick up any ground balls that come your way and throw them to third if the runner is almost there or throw them home if the runner has already left third base.
