Keep your eye on the game and you might find the right opportunity to get a runner out on first base. Use your ability to think quickly and your skills as a ball player to help win the game. Use these tips to pick a runner off first base in softball.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Pick off the runner if you are the catcher. Watch the pitcher throw the ball to you. Catch the ball and throw it quickly to first base. Throw carefully so the first base person catches the ball to get the runner out.

  2. Step 2

Watch the pitcher so you know when the ball will be thrown. The runner on first base cannot run until the pitcher releases the ball during the pitch.

  3. Step 3

Look at the batter and see where the batter hits the ball. You want to know if it is coming your way. Watch the ball and watch the runner on first base.

  4. Step 4

See if the runner leads off the base and moves toward second base. Pay particular attention to a runner with a big lead because they will steal the base.

  5. Step 5

Watch the ball from infield. Tag the runner leading off from first base or throw the ball to first base.

  6. Step 6

Catch a fly ball and get the batter out. Then throw the ball to first base. The first base runner will try to beat the ball back to the first base if the runner was trying to make it to second base. Make sure the ball gets to first base before the runner can return to base.

  7. Step 7

Get the ball when you're an outfielder. Catch it or pick it off the ground. Throw it to second base before the runner can make it to the base.
