Step 1
Know the type of riding that you'll be doing and the type of bike you have. You'll often want a different saddle for mountain biking than for road biking. You may also want to keep in mind the length of time that you normally ride in case you need to compromise on performance and price. Getting the right saddle for the right biking activity will make it more comfortable.
-
Step 2
Choose either a male or female saddle. Men and women have different bodies and saddles now reflect the differences. You'll also want to tailor the gender-specific saddles to your body. For example, if you have a wide pelvis, look for a saddle with a wider rear. You'll find the ride more comfortable and more medically sound when you choose the appropriate saddle for your sex.
-
Step 3
Look at the saddle's composition. A good quality saddle is made of leather or synthetic leather and has impact guards on the rear. Look for a saddle that is constructed well and is lightweight.
-
Step 4
Test the saddle out. Even if you plan to order online, try to find a place that has the bike saddle you want or a similar model so that you can test it. Try out the saddle on a variety of terrains if possible and body positions.
-
Step 5
Head to a serious bike shop. If you don't know much about saddles or just want to talk to someone about the options, a bike shop is the best place to go as the salespeople are generally bike enthusiasts themselves.

on 6/6/2008 I only do Cycle Touring and around town biking, but would recommend Brooks saddles for these pursuits. These are solid leather saddles and have to be broken in, but once they are they will conform to the shape of your behind. Most serious tourist use these. Two of my bikes have them.
