How to Make a Delta Kite: Aerodynamics

Delta kites usually have triangular wings and are aerodynamically stable. The sturdy design of the kite and its aerodynamic shape make delta kites one of the most popular kite designs in the world. Delta kites come in many shapes and sizes, but they all share the same aerodynamic principles.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Delta Kite Kit
  1. Step 1

Assemble the delta kite from the kit (see Resources below). Pay close attention to the spars on the leading edge of the wings. The wings' structure have to be rigid in order to cut through the air turbulence with ease.

  2. Step 2

Push in the connecting rods firmly. The rods have to be attached securely in order to maintain the structural integrity of the delta kite. Give the rods a slight twist at the end to lock them in place.

  3. Step 3

Secure the flying line through the keel at the center. The keel behaves like the bridle used in other kite designs and controls the kite's flight angle.

  4. Step 4

Attach stabilizing locks with Velcro. Velcro can be attached to the edges of a delta kite to provide a more rigid airframe. The kite must hold its shape to maximize the aerodynamics.

  5. Step 5

Fly the kite in a 5 to 10 mph wind. This is the optimal wind speed for a delta kite to keep its aerodynamic shape.
