How to Pick Soy Candle Heating Equipment

Making soy candles requires the use of melted soy wax. This means that the candle maker will need a method of melting the wax. The method that a candle maker chooses for heating soy wax depends on personal preference, convenience and what type of heating will be the most reliable at the needed temperatures.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Pick out where the soy wax will be heated. For many people, the kitchen stove is the best heating source for their wax because of its convenience. It is centrally located and is easy to operate. But some candle makers choose to use a hot plate instead. These can be easier to clean than a kitchen stove and can be used in any room in the house.

  2. Step 2

Choose a container for heating the soy wax. The best temperature for melting wax is about 200 degrees. A double boiler or a wax pouring pot are both ideal for melting wax. They are made of a thick enough metal to withstand the temperatures needed for heating wax and they are made to heat evenly. The choice between the two usually comes down to ease of use and personal preference.

  3. Step 3

Use a pouring pot if you will be using the same color of wax often. The inside of a pouring pot is deep and difficult to clean out completely. Use a double boiler if you plan to change the color of the wax often. It will be easier to melt the wax out of a double boiler.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always use a candle thermometer when heating wax. Without a thermometer, the wax may get too hot without your knowledge. Wax that is too hot can easily burst into flames.
