Choosing the right frame makes all the difference in turning a picture into a polished piece of art. The width of your picture frame will need to compensate for the size of the piece you are framing. Using a thin picture frame gives you a multitude of options as far as style with just a few limitations regarding size to consider.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Browse several frame shops to get an idea of the kind of thin frames that are available. Take your pictures with you to see them against the frames.

  2. Step 2

Consider the size of your artwork or photograph. Thin picture frames can't support the weight of more than one matte along with the glass and backing without having some of it protruding out of the back of the frame. Use these frames for items sized 16 by 20 inches or smaller.

  3. Step 3

Create a visual balance between the frame and your picture. A thin picture frame can look lost on a large or dramatic piece of art. Proportion is key to make sure your frame and picture complement each other while letting your artwork shine.

  4. Step 4

Choose a picture or piece of art that can stand alone in your thin frame. Without needing a matte, your picture will shine and your frame will be able to support it adequately.

  5. Step 5

Display your thin picture frames in a group on a shelf, table or wall. Because the framed items will tend toward the smaller side, you can use several to make a larger impact. Keep the frames and mattes identical for a more cohesive look.
