Polystyrene picture frames are a lightweight, inexpensive option for framing your photographs, professional certificates and artwork. These frames are very similar in appearance to traditional frames made from costlier materials and therefore allow you to decorate your space at a fraction of the cost.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Consider the photograph or artwork in order to pick a matching frame. Polystyrene frames come in a multitude of colors, finishes and designs. If you're framing a modern piece of art, use a streamlined frame. If your item is antique looking, choose an ornate frame to mirror the time period. Make sure the frame complements your decor rather than competing with it.

  2. Step 2

Visit several stores with your picture to see it against the polystyrene frame options available in your area. Hold the picture up to the various frame moldings to make sure you like the result. Polystyrene frames are a good option for the majority needs, but in some cases, a piece may be too upscale for this type of frame.

  3. Step 3

Choose a neutral-colored matte if you are using one. The matte should coordinate with your artwork, frame and room. If you are framing a diploma or certificate, opt to display it without a mat and let the achievement stand on its own.

  4. Step 4

Select a picture frame that is thick enough for everything you are framing, including the overlay, matte and backing.

  5. Step 5

Use a frame wide enough to balance your artwork but not so wide that it overpowers your piece.

  6. Step 6

Hang your picture frames with proper mounting materials in a secure location. Polystyrene frames are prone to breaking if they fall on one of their corners.

Tips & Warnings
  • Repurpose old polystyrene frames or picture frames from a second-hand store if your style is eclectic.
