Sewing a binding around the edge of a custom placement prevents fraying, finishes the edge and gives the placemat a polished, professionally tailored look. A blind stitch is used to attach the binding to the placemat edge. It's an important basic stitch that has many uses in finishing garments and custom decor pieces. It is a must learn for anyone involved in fabric arts.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose a thread that matches the binding's fabric.

  2. Step 2

Thread the needle with a single thickness of thread. Knot the thread at the end.

  3. Step 3

Bring the needle up through the top of the binding. Remember that the binding is 1/4 inch of fabric turned under on both sides to hide the fabric edges. It is then folded around the raw edge of the placemat to hide that raw edge. Bring your needle up through the tip of the top edge of the binding, hiding the thread's end knot under the binding edge. Draw your thread all the way through the fabric.

  4. Step 4

Reinsert the needle down into the placemat fabric only, just behind where the thread exits the fabric. Do not catch the binding in this downward stitch.

  5. Step 5

Bring the needle back up from the placemat fabric and catch the very top back edge of the binding fold. Do not come up through the top of the fold itself as your stitches, no matter how small, will still show. Catch the very top of the back of the fold. Pull the thread through until it is taut.

  6. Step 6

Reinsert the needle down into the placemat fabric without catching the binding, just behind where the thread exits the fabric and binding (i.e., the exit point of the previous stitch).

  7. Step 7

Bring the needle back up out of the placemat fabric again and catch the very top back edge of the binding fold.

  8. Step 8

Pull the thread through until it is taut. This makes one complete blind stitch.

  9. Step 9

Repeat the blind stitch from Steps 9 through 11 until you have attached the binding to this side of the placemat.

  10. Step 10

Turn the placemat over and attach the binding to the placemat with the same blind stitch as you did on the first side of the placemat.
