If the drab decoration in your dining room has you depressed, you can easily make your own table decorations for very little money. With a little do-it-yourself knowledge, you'll be fast on your way toward having the most beautiful dining room on the block.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Consider different materials for your placemat. Because this is a flip-and-sew placemat, you can use pretty much any material you have lying around the house. This is a good rainy-day project that will help you clear space in your sewing kit. If you have kids, it's also a great and easy creative project for them to get involved in.
Step2
Purchase your fabric, if you don't have extra fabric lying around, at your local fabric store. If fabric shopping is not on your agenda, you can shop for fabric online at websites, such as Hancock Fabrics, and have it delivered to your house. It's best to buy large quantities of fabric to make shipping and handling worth your while. Select fabrics in the colors and patterns that will complement your dining room décor.
Step3
Choose a design for the front of your placemat. This can be something store bought or custom. If you're not as artistic as some people, a store-bought design is nothing to be ashamed of. There are many options, and no one will judge you.
Step4
Cut your fabric for your flip-and-sew design into strips of a uniform width and length. The width is up to you, but the length should be just as long as the width of your actual placemat. Remember, home craftwork is highly creative. You don't have to follow this exact design. This is just something basic to start with.
Step5
Sew the pieces to the back of the mat side by side. A sewing machine comes in handy for this, but it's not totally necessary. It's also important to note that you are not sewing these pieces directly to the back of your design but into the fabric that you design to attach to your placemat. When finished, you can also add a border around the edges for a more elegant look.
