Placemats are not just for dinner anymore. Through the wonders of do-it-yourself home customization, you can turn any object into a monument to your own individual personality. This once mundane household item can quickly become the centerpiece of your next meal.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Figure out what kind of fabric you'll need. Arts-and-crafts stores offer a huge variety of colors and designs, so this step can take you all day. To help speed things up, it will help if you have an idea already in mind. Keep the room's design in mind and try to find materials that will compliment that and still retain their own striking brilliance. It may not be easy, but it's not impossible.

  2. Step 2

Buy the fabric. For this step, it is important to have a concept of how big the placemats are or will be, as this will determine how much material you should buy. You should always buy a little more than is needed just in case an accident happens and you need to start over. Allowing room for mistakes will help take the stress out of any project. This is supposed to be relaxing and rewarding.

  3. Step 3

Cut the fabric into the desired size. It would help to have a straight edge (preferably a ruler). You can also use a pencil to lightly mark the lines you are going to cut. Don't use a writing utensil that will leave heavy lines or you will possibly ruin your fabric.

  4. Step 4

Place the vinyl on top of your placemat material and place the binding along the edge. Place pins along the edge of the placement to prepare for sewing the pieces together. If you don't, there is a good chance your placemat will end up looking crooked and not very nice. Take the extra time to make sure things will go smoothly and you won't be dissatisfied later.

  5. Step 5

Sew along the edge of the binding. This will keep both the vinyl and the binding in place. Sew about 1/4 to 1/2 inches into the binding. This will ensure that the stitching will have enough material to cling to. Stop sewing less than an inch from the corner of your placemat and fold the binding so it will continue along the edge of your placemat. Continue sewing until complete.
