The bottom of a garment bag should be hemmed to prevent the fabric from unraveling. The fabric on the bottom of the garment bag gets a lot of wear and tear, and the hem reinforces the fabric of the garment bag and keeps it in good condition.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Turn over a 1/4-inch hem along the bottom edge of the garment bag. The amount of fabric turned under should be uniform. Keep the fabric from puckering while turning it under. Turn up an additional 1/4 inch and secure with a pin or hold with your fingers.

  2. Step 2

Place the hem on your sewing machine and stitch with a straight stitch. You're basically making a shirt-tail hem.

  3. Step 3

Continue to turn under the hem as you stitch the entire circumference of the garment bag.

  4. Step 4

Add a contrasting fabric or ribbon along the hem for additional reinforcement or for decoration.

  5. Step 5

Consider using a zipper or hook and loop tape on the bottom of your garment bag if you want additional security.
