There are as many different reasons for steaming as there are methods. Steaming is a good way to omit fats in your cooking and to keep nutrients sealed in your food. People often view steaming as something you do to vegetables and maybe fish. However, chicken and other meats are good when steamed as well. Chicken biryani is one of those dishes that's enhanced with flavor when steamed.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make chicken biryani or a similar rice and chicken dish. Chicken biryani is a traditional Pakistani or Indian dish featuring spicy flavors.

  2. Step 2

Add all of your ingredients together in one casserole dish. Make sure you have a lid for the dish in which you'll steam the chicken biryani.

  3. Step 3

Select a cotton cloth or kitchen linen that is large enough to wrap around the casserole dish lid. To test whether the cloth is big enough, place the cloth flat on the table and set the lid on it. You should be able to pull the cloth up and around the lid knob and tie it with string.

  4. Step 4

Dampen the cotton cloth and squeeze out the excess water. Place it around casserole lid, as you did when testing the size in Step 4. Secure it to the lid knob or secure the cloth to itself.

  5. Step 5

Cover chicken biryani with lid and steam over low heat for about 10 minutes. The cloth ensures that no steam escapes as your rice, chicken and spices cook together.

  6. Step 6

Remove from the stove and stir contents to make sure the chicken and other ingredients are mixed nicely. Serve from a presentable table casserole or dish and serve on desired tableware.

Tips & Warnings
  • If chicken isn't your dish, try any number of biryani recipes including vegetable, prawn, lamb and tilapia.
  • Make sure the cotton cloth is secured tightly around the knob of the casserole lid or gathered tightly to itself as if in a ponytail. Never leave the casserole unattended while you steam the chicken biryani.
