Curly hair is a blessing and a curse. People envy the natural curls and volume and try to get the luscious curls at any cost. But people with curly hair know there are a few tricks of the trade to make the curls manageable and lustrous, beginning with the way you wash it.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Prepare the client (or yourself) for hair washing. Drape a waterproof hairstyling drape over the shoulders, placing a small folded towel at the base of the neck to prevent any water from dripping down under the drape. Get the client or yourself into a comfortable position for washing.

  2. Step 2

Quench the curly hair with a hydrating shampoo. Curly hair tends to need extra moisture. The hair will frizz, tangle and be hard to manage without the added moisture that a hydrating shampoo provides.

  3. Step 3

Massage the shampoo into the hair starting from the scalp and working your way down to the ends of the hair. You will want to try to avoid making any tangles in the hair before the fine toothed comb preps the hair of the cut. This keeps the hair healthier and the client happier.

  4. Step 4

Give the hydrating shampoo another opportunity to make the curly hair more manageable with a second wash. This second wash also ensures that any product or residue is washed clean from the hair before the cut and style. Follow up with a hydrating conditioner.
