Step 1
Start with the first small section of hair. This is usually the bottom underside near the nape of the neck. As you continue to make cuts, take small sections of hair at a time to ensure even cuts.
-
Step 2
Comb each small section until there are no tangles and the curly hair is pulled straight through your first and third fingers. It is common to comb and cut with the same hand and hold the hair with the other hand.
-
Step 3
Make a good first cut. The first cut you make will be the guide for the rest of the shaping. Decide how much hair you want to take off. Keep in mind that curly hair will shrink up into the curls as it dries.
-
Step 4
Cut the entire first section around the base of the neck. Separate out the next section of hair, about an inch, from above the first cut. You will repeat this process at least four times until you reach near the crown of the head.
-
Step 5
Run the comb through the first cut section of the hair newly added to the section you are cutting. You will notice that where the cut was made in the first section, the hair appears darker against the new section. This line is your guide for the remaining cuts. Comb through the hair a couple times to make sure you have the right line and continue with the style.
