Step 1
Get control of your color. Sectioning out your hair allows you to have more control over the color. Even color throughout your style depends on your pre-planning before you dip into the color.
-
Step 2
Figure out what hair you want highlighted and what hair you do not want any color to touch. Be precise in your sections, what will be colored and what will remain natural. Pull back and clip sections that will not receive any color away from the hair you are highlighting to prevent bleeding or color transfer.
-
Step 3
Pick a pattern for your highlights. Highlights can start anywhere in your hair, from a concentration of coverage around your face to all over highlights. You can choose to highlight according to your natural part or how you style your hair. The highlights can give you a different look with each way you style your hair if you choose only certain areas or parts to color.
-
Step 4
Prep for success when using a highlighting color cap. You do not need to section out your hair for highlight kits that use a color cap. It is very important that you brush the hair free of tangles and snags and make sure the hair is smooth and down before you place the cap on your head.

Step 5
Section for all-over color with care. You do not want to miss any sections of your hair with all-over color. Any undyed or unevenly dyed hair will stick out like a sore thumb. Start with dividing your hair into 4 sections. You will have more control over the smaller amounts of hair than if you attack with color all over at the same time.
