How to Use Arms in Military Cadence

March in step with your fellow soldiers and learn the marching drills and techniques used by the U.S. military. Learn military cadence to better march in rhythm with the drills, beats and music. Practice marching in military cadence to perfect the precision seen in military units on parade.

      Step forward 30 inches with your left foot. Measure your step length from heel to heel of each foot. Swing your right arm forward as you step forward with your left foot. Step forward 30 inches with your right foot. Swing your left arm forward as your right foot moves forward. Repeat until the halt command is given. Use these arm movements in all military drills.

      Allow your arms to hang naturally at your sides with your hands cupped and your thumbs touching your pant leg during military drills. Swing your arms in a natural manner. Keep your forward arm motion to 9 inches in front of your thigh. Keep the backward arm swing to within 6 inches of the back of your thigh. Keep the swing natural with elbows unbent. Hands are curled and only pass your pant leg.

      Stop marching when the halt command is given. Keep your feet at a 45-degree angle. Allow your arms to hang at your sides with your weight equally distributed on both feet.
