When working in post-production, you are often dealing with many large video files on your computer. It is important to keep track of the files and keep your computer in good shape so it doesn't get overloaded and crash mid-project, causing you to lose work. Preserve disk space to save all post-production video files.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Save your files to an alternate location. Burn them on a CD or DVD, publish them on a website or save on a flash drive or external hard drive. More than one location is ideal. Use a consistent saving and filing method so it is easy to keep track of your video files.

  2. Step 2

Delete the original video files from your hard drive. Drag the files into the Recycling bin. After you have dragged all the files, clear out the bin. To clear the Recycle bin, left click the bin or left click the file in the hard drive to delete it.

  3. Step 3

Defrag the hard drive on a regular basis. This will keep your computer in good shape and allow it to run at its best speed. Click the "Start" button, choose "Programs," "Accessories," "System Tools" and then "Disk Defragmenter." Be aware that the process can take a while.

  4. Step 4

Get in the practice of keeping your computer well-organized and running in top shape. Set aside certain hard drive space for different types of video files or projects. This will make archiving files easy since everything will be together.
