The G grace note is one of the most important notes in bagpipe music, and it is the first grace note a bagpiper should learn. Grace notes are an essential item in the bagpipe player's repertoire, as they are used frequently in bagpipe music.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Lift the left index finger up and down to play the G grace note. The G grace note has to be played quickly and smoothly as you are not trying to play a full G note but making a rapid G to transition between other notes.

  2. Step 2

Lift and lower the left index finger quickly while playing other notes on the scale starting with the Low G. Grace notes are used as accented bridges between other notes in the song. They should be played naturally and not forced.

  3. Step 3

Play the A and, just before playing the B, drop the left index finger and lift it again as you play the B. Moving up the scale towards the index finger in this manner will train the mind how to naturally place grace notes.

  4. Step 4

End one note before playing the next. As you move back down the scale, concentrate on making a single sound for each note and be sure to not play two or three notes instead.
