The D grace note is one three common grace notes used in bagpipe playing. Grace notes are added to a song to accentuate a bagpipe tune as ornamentation to the other notes in the tune. D grace notes on the bagpipe are used to differentiate between notes such as the E or C.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Play the D grace notes using the right hand. The D grace notes are played to accompany other notes that are also played with the right hand.

  2. Step 2

Play the melody note with the right hand. The ring, index and middle fingers of the right hand have to move fluidly between notes.

  3. Step 3

Raise and lower the index finger rapidly to play the D grace note. Going from B to C is the most difficult transition to make when playing a D grace note.

  4. Step 4

Practice playing the D grace notes at half or quarter speed to get the feel for the fingering. The D grace note requires more time to learn as it has a complicated fingering pattern.
