The purpose of locking a guitar string to the tuning post is to help keep the strings in place as you play. If the guitar strings become loose, they can stretch and settle. This can cause your guitar to fall out of tune. Leave the proper amount of slack in the guitar strings to prevent the locked end from slipping off of the tuning post.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide how much slack to leave in your guitar string, then thread the string through the tuning post. You may want to measure the length of the string to ensure that you leave the right amount of slack.

  2. Step 2

Press the string against the side of the tuning post with your finger so it doesn't slip out of place. This will help to keep the proper amount of slack in the string.

  3. Step 3

Wind the string around the tuning post toward the inside of the headstock. Wind it until you reach the stationary part of the string.

  4. Step 4

Pull on the loose end of the string so that there's no slack where you wrapped it around the tuning post.

  5. Step 5

Thread the guitar string underneath itself. The loose end should be underneath the stationary part of the string that threads into the tuning post.

  6. Step 6

Wrap the loose end of the guitar string back over the stationary part in the opposite direction to create a sideways "U." Now the strings are ready to wind around the tuning post.
