Mastering English is the key component to pool or billiards. English is not hard to learn. It just takes practice. Think of a cue ball as a clock: each number gives you a different hit on the ball or English. There is only one way to learn English and that is through practice.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pool stick
  • Pool table
  • Striped balls
  • Cue ball
  • Patience
  1. Step 1

Get a striped ball and a cue ball to practice your English. You will strike the striped ball with the cue ball at certain places that are easier to see than on a solid ball.

  2. Step 2

Hit the cue ball at the center with your stick and watch how it hits the striped ball, where the ball goes, and where the cue ball ends up. If you are off center, the striped ball will go to either the left or the right and so will the cue ball.

  3. Step 3

Aim your stick at the right side of the cue ball without hitting the striped ball—repeat this hit and move your tap to the right gradually with each stroke. Pay attention to how far to the left the cue ball goes. Do the same for the left side of the cue ball.

  4. Step 4

Set a striped ball in front of the cue ball at the center of the table and repeat the step above for both the right and left side.

  5. Step 5

Read the direction the ball will go as you use English to position the striped ball and put it in the pocket. Practice hitting the striped ball into the pocket from one position at a time—master one stroke of English at a time.

  6. Step 6

Feel your stroke—it should not be a short jab. A stroke is an easy smooth stretch of your arm that ends as you make contact with the cue ball.

  7. Step 7

Spot more than one ball on the table and continue to practice your English by hitting all the balls into the pocket.

Tips & Warnings
  • Daily practice is the only way to master pool.
  • You need to master English to win at billiards.
  • A jerk of the stick will only hurt your game and could result in a big tear in the felt of the table.
