How to Stand as a Left-handed Golfer

Learning the right stance is essential to developing a consistent and effective golf swing. Because most golfers are right-handed, lefties sometimes have trouble finding clubs, equipment and instruction that's good for their game. The stance, however, is pretty much the same for both righties and lefties and is easy to learn by following these steps.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Place your club head directly behind the ball. Make sure to line it up flush with the ball so that your shot's aimed where you want it to go.

  2. Step 2

Stand next to the ball with your feet together so that it sits directly between your shoes.

  3. Step 3

Slide your right foot to the right and your left foot to the left. Your feet should now be evenly spaced and shoulder-width apart.

  4. Step 4

Make sure the imaginary line running across your feet is parallel to the ball's line of flight. If your feet aren't pointing right where you want the ball to go, you'll either hook or slice your shot.

  5. Step 5

Move your feet forward or backward to adjust the ball's position in your stance. For example, if you're using a six iron, slide both your feet to the left in order to move the ball forward in your stance.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take a narrower stance when hitting shorter clubs and a wider stance when hitting longer clubs.
  • Keep your weight more toward the balls of your feet than toward your heels. This gives you better body control during the swing and helps you stay balanced afterward.
