Step 1
Ignore the popular myth that daddy longlegs are the most venomous spider in the world. Their small fangs make biting humans impossible. Although daddy longlegs are equipped with venom, there is no evidence that proves the venom is dangerous to humans.
-
Step 2
Remember that a daddy longlegs isn't going to bite you. Should it land on you, or crawl over your foot, it won't deliver a lethal bite. This is important to remember if your fear stems from getting bitten.
-
Step 3
Educate yourself about daddy longlegs. Many fears grow from rumors or stories heard as a child, and the fear perpetuates into adulthood. Check out books at the library such as, "Spiders and Their Kin." Watch science and nature shows about spiders and daddy longlegs on television, and search the Internet for websites that have myths about daddy longlegs and spiders, such as "The Spider Myths Site" on the Washington University website.
-
Step 4
Look at pictures of daddy longlegs and practice realistic situations with fake spiders. Have a family member hide fake spiders throughout the house, and when you come across one, practice calmly catching it, or calling for someone else to catch it, without freaking out.
-
Step 5
Speak with a therapist about your fear. Audio hypnotherapy sessions are an option, even if you don't visit a therapist. Certain websites offer CDs or downloadable files for MP3 players that consist of hypnotherapy sessions for arachnophobia.
