How to Ask Parents to Allow Moving Out When You're 16

When you are sixteen you feel grown up but the law in most states says you are still a minor. If you want to move out the easiest way is to get permission from your parents. When parents allow you to move out, you can find out firsthand what it is like to be on your own.

Instructions

    • 1

Plan your move out. Before bringing this to your parents make sure you know where you are going and with whom you will be living.

    • 2

Get a part time after school job before your talk to your parents. Although this certainly is not enough money to live on, it shows your parents you are ready for responsibility.

    • 3

Ask your parents for a chat. Advise them that the topic will be moving out and prepare for resistance.

    • 4

Make sure you have a list of reasons ready when you talk to your parents. Advise them that you are not happy with the curfew they give you or whatever the specific reasons are that cause you to decide to move out.

    • 5

Advise them that you have already made plans with your friend and you have a safe place to go.

    • 6

Invite your parents to meet your friend. Also, make sure they know it is fine for them to visit you and you will visit them as well.

    • 7

Tell your parents you do not want them out of your life. You just want the freedom to live your own life. You are not their child anymore and are ready to take responsibility for living on your own.

If you want to move out so badly and you're only 16 years old, I recommend family therapy or individual therapy. You're not ready at 16 and honestly, most people aren't ready at 18. There are other options for you.
