Take up the Japanese martial art Aikido for an interesting, useful and active hobby. The idea of Aikido is based on defense with minimal effort. The moves are designed to redirect the attacker's momentum instead of directly opposing it. The art is filled with throws and locks.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Throw the attacker off balance as he approaches you with an arm raised to strike. Let him come to you, and simply deter the arm by grabbing his wrist and pushing it to the side.

  2. Step 2

Raise the wrist and bring your body underneath it as the attacker struggles to regain control of his arm. Bring the attacker's wrist over your shoulder and turn your back to the attacker.

  3. Step 3

Rotate your body underneath the attacker's arm until you are now facing the attacker. Maintain a tight hold on the attacker's wrist so that it doesn't rotate in your hand. By turning, you twist the attacker's arm and totally incapacitate her.

  4. Step 4

Gain control of the situation as you twist the attacker's arm. Force the arm to the attacker's back, which forces the attacker to bend forward. With his head and shoulders down, he's at a complete disadvantage.

  5. Step 5

Straighten the attacker's elbow, then twist and pin the arm against her back with the elbow locked. Keep the elbow locked by placing your other hand on it to hold it in place.

  6. Step 6

Bend the attacker's wrist. Now, it's nearly impossible to escape because of the locked elbow.
