Now a beloved classic decoration, the garden gnome first appeared over 150 years ago in Germany. The original gnomes were hand-crafted out of terra-cotta clay and often became prized family possessions handed down from one generation to the next. Unfortunately, most gnomes are now mass produced and made out of cheap, artless materials like plastic. If you're looking for a classic garden gnome, follow these steps to find the right one.

From Quick Guide: Decorating with Garden Gnomes
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look for gnomes made out of durable materials like clay, ceramic or in some cases resin. The best gnomes are hand-crafted, but there's no sense in choosing one that won't last outdoors.

  2. Step 2

Pick a gnome that's built from materials suitable for your climate. For example, ceramic and terra cotta tend to crack in extreme cold, so plastic or resin gnomes might be best if you have long, hard winters.

  3. Step 3

Purchase your gnome from a company that specializes in making hand-crafted, one-of-a-kind gnomes. Kimmel Gnomes claims to be the only such manufacturer in the U.S., but it's always wise to shop around.

  4. Step 4

Choose a gnome with a relaxed, easy-going temperament. Gnomes are supposed to bring good luck to your garden and home. Their expressions should reflect this tradition.

  5. Step 5

Make sure the gnome's wearing a pointy red hat. You can buy gnomes with other colored headgear, but red's the traditional color and tends to look the best nestled amongst garden greenery.

  6. Step 6

Buy a gnome that is the right size for your garden. Small gnomes get lost in large shrubs and bushes, while large gnomes tower over short flower beds and planters.

Tips & Warnings
  • Find a spot in your garden for the gnome before you buy it. When you go to make the purchase, keep the spot's colors and design in mind and choose the most appropriate gnome.
