Instructions

    • 1

Gather cookie cutters of various Christmas-themed shapes such as trees, candy canes, bells, stars and bulbs. Put one of the cookie cutters on a sheet of black crafting foam, which is available at most craft stores. Trace around the outside of the cookie cutter with a broad-tip, washable marker, then trace a 1/4-inch-thick line around the inside of the cookie cutter to create a frame for the ornaments.

    • 2

Repeat Step 1 for as many cookie cutter shapes as you want to use. Cut along the lines of the traced crafting foam so that you have your shapes.

    • 3

Apply some plastic wrap tightly onto a baking sheet. Cover the plastic wrap with your favorite marker colors.

    • 4

Paint the framed edges of the ornaments with black dimensional paint to add gloss. This paint can also be found at the craft store. After painting the frames, press them into the colored plastic wrap. This helps to create that stained-glass look.

    • 5

Cut at least 4 inches of thin wire for each ornament, then bend them into U-shaped loops for hanging. Gently insert the end of the loop between the plastic on the baking sheet and the frame. Then, secure the loop ends with a drop of glue.

    • 6

Fill the inside of the ornament pattern with glue. Dry the ornaments on the plastic for at least 36 hours until they look like glass and the glue appears transparent. Carefully remove the ornaments from the plastic, and continue to let them dry on another piece of plastic for eight hours or until completely dried.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also add a stained glass look to existing Christmas bulbs or other ornaments. Some of the supplies required include colored mosaic chips, transfer paper and mosaic adhesive.

  • Make your stained glass ornaments edible. Follow your favorite cookie recipe and use cookie cutters. Then, crush and melt pieces of hard candy into the center. Remember to add tiny holes to the tops of your ornaments before baking so you can hang them.
