A saltwater aquarium can be a beautiful addition to almost any room. Certain additions to a saltwater fish tank, such as corals or anemones, require supplements in order for them to survive and flourish in captivity. Iron, calcium and magnesium are some common supplements for saltwater aquariums.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine the supplements that you need for your saltwater aquarium. You can find this out by asking a sales person at the store where you purchased the marine life for your fish tank.

  2. Step 2

Read the directions on the supplement container. Certain supplements, such as iron and calcium, must be added to your aquarium gradually. Make sure that you understand the directions.

  3. Step 3

Figure out the proper amount of each supplement to add to your saltwater aquarium. Most supplements will list a certain amount of the supplement for a certain number of gallons. For example, if the bottle says you need to add one tsp. of the supplement per five gallons, you would need eleven tsp. of the supplement for a 55-gallon fish tank.

  4. Step 4

Measure out the supplement. Make sure that you use measuring spoons made to measure liquids. If a measuring tool is provided with the supplement, you should use it instead of measuring spoons.

  5. Step 5

Turn off your filter system while you are adding the supplements. It is a good idea to leave the filter system off for at least one hour after you add the supplements.

  6. Step 6

Pour the supplement slowly into the aquarium. If the supplement requires you to test the water after adding the supplement, you should wait at least thirty minutes before you test so the supplement can circulate evenly through the water.

  7. Step 7

Keep track of when you add supplements to your saltwater aquarium. Some supplements have to be added at specific intervals, such as every two days or every other week. You can use a calendar to keep track of the supplements you add to your fish tank.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some supplements can't be used with a carbon-based filtration system. If this is the case with the supplements you need for your tank, remove all carbon from your filters before adding the supplement.
