1
Select a bed size that fits your need and room; consider what will have to moved when the bed is opened as well as the additional heft of a larger mattress. Most wall beds are twin size however a king-size bed is possible if the application works for you.
-
2
Measure the height, width and depth of the mattress you have chosen as this will be the size of the box you'll need in the wall. Choose a thin mattress to ensure it will fit into the opening.

3
Build your bed box by securing lumber of your choice to the plywood bottom. You can see the bottom of the box when the bed is in the upright position so select a veneer that will fit the furnishings in the room. Cut the plywood to the size of the mattress and secure all of the pieces together with wood screws.

4
Inspect the wall and ensure there are no electric or gas lines behind the wall. Open the wall with one edge running along a stud. This allows you to secure the bed box easily. Twin and double beds require the removal of 2 studs, while a queen and king will require that 3 studs be removed. Measure the completed box and verify it will fit in the wall after you add the internal frame.
-
5
Use finished wood to box in the frame within the wall as this area will be visible when the bed is down. Install the internal box and measure again to verify the bed box will fit.
-
6
Install 2 piano hinges by securing them to each side of the header board of the frame. Secure the other end of the hinges to the bottom of the internal frame and the bed is now ready to fold into the wall.
-
7
Cover the jagged edges of the wall with molding to add the finishing touch to the wall bed installation. Add a simple hook and loop to secure the bed in place when closed.
