How to Make an Andy Warhol Costume

Andy Warhol was a social activist, artist, filmmaker, author and record producer. He was instrumental in the Pop Art movement. Andy Warhol created the Factory in the '70s. It was a place where actors, artist and musicians would congregate together. An Andy Warhol costume is a simple look that can be assembled easily.

Things You'll Need

  • Black turtleneck
  • Fitted black suit
  • Platinum or grey wig or hair dye
  • Platform shoes
  • Blue jeans
  • Campbell's tomato soup can
  • Paint brush
  • Large round black-rimmed glasses
  • Choose the Andy Warhol look you are going for. In his early career, Andy often wore black turtlenecks with or without a jacket and a pair of faded blue jeans. In the later years he wore dark, fitted suits. These suits are late '70s and early '80s style suits normally worn without a tie.

  • Fix your hair or purchase a wig. If your bangs hang below your eyebrows and your hair is short in the back, temporarily dye your hair platinum blond or gray. If your hair will not work, purchase a short platinum or gray wig with long bangs. Andy Warhol's hair was straight and had jagged ends.

  • Find a pair of platform shoes to wear with the costume. Platform boots or any male platform shoes will do.

  • Purchase a can of Campbell's tomato soup and a paint brush. Warhol was famous for his painting of a Campbell's tomato soup. When you wear the costume, carry the can and paint brush around.

  • Wear a pair of large, round dark or black-framed glasses. These glasses need to be a '70s style with large lenses. His glasses were similar to the ones worn by Charles Nelson Riley.
