How to Sell Herb Plants Retail

Herbs and natural remedies are a booming part of the economy. Starting up a retail business to sell herb plants is a great way to bring in extra money. Herb plants are used for everything from season cooking dishes to heal your body's aches and pains.

  1. Step 1

    Register your company name and get a tax ID for retail sales if you do not already have one. Go to your state's website to locate the office you need to contact to get a tax ID and register your name. Some states call the Office the Comptrollers and some states use county clerks.

  2. Step 2

    Lease or purchase a store where you can sell your herb plants. Find an area that is big enough for your store and a small greenhouse. Build or buy a green house to store the plants. Greenhouses can be purchased pre-made on in assembly kits from most do-it-yourself and home improvement stores.

  3. Step 3

    Locate distributors who sell a wide variety of herbal plants and seeds. Search through wholesale directories like Plantsearchonline.com for herbal products.

  4. Step 4

    Buy or purchase an array of herbal plants and seeds for your store. Purchase plenty of potting soil, plant food and pots. Most common household herbs normally seed very well. Aromatic and medical herbs such as peppermint, ginger and ginseng sell very well in large cities and town with a high population of health conscious people.

  5. Step 5

    Setup your greenhouse so the plants get the right amount of light. Read instructions about how to grow each herb. Some herbs require more light than others and some herbs require more water than others. Read the directions of each of the plants and create the correct climate for the plants.

    Plant some of the seeds according to the instructions on the seed packets so that you will have plenty of plants to sell. The germination period on most herb seeds is 10 to 14 days. In the right climate the plants sprout with in 1 week.

    Take cuttings of larger plants to make more herbal plants. Cut one or two stalks or limbs at an angle and plant that cutting in a fresh pot of soil.

    Display the healthier plants in the storefront along with seeds, potting soils, pots and other gardening accessories.

    Make a sign to place in front of the store to attract customers. Develop a marketing strategy to get the word out about your new store.
