Step 1
Turn your skates on one edge of the blade and get some momentum going. Stick one toe into the ice to create a stopping motion while you continue to move forward. Pick up your legs as you travel. Most figure skaters spread their legs out from front to back as they hurl through the air.
-
Step 2
Add spins to your jumps by putting your upper body into motion as you leave the ice. Bring your arms close to your body as you turn to provide you with the aerodynamics necessary to move in the air. Spread your arms back out to help balance yourself when you land.
-
Step 3
Train for jumping in figure skating by working on your back and core muscle groups. You will need to exert a lot of control over your body to maintain the proper posture during jumps if you don't want to land on your fanny after every try.
-
Step 4
Practice skating on different edges of your blades. This will get you accustomed to doing the run that you need before getting your body to go into a jump. You should be able to skate on the outside and inside edge of one blade at a time and on both blades at once to get in the right position to get yourself airborne.
