How to Use the Ferber Sleep Method for Infants

Dr. Richard Ferber invented the Ferber sleep method to help parents deal with the struggles of their babies sleep habits. It is know as "Ferberizing" or "cry it out." It's a progressive technique that trains children to put themselves to sleep and requires patience. The goal is to teach your baby to become independent in the sleep process.

Instructions

    • 1

Set a night time routine for you and your baby. The routine needs to be loving and soothing for your baby. It's important to stick to a routine as it helps develop lasting healthy sleep habits.

    • 2

Put your baby to bed awake. Leave the room and allow your baby to soothe himself to sleep.

    • 3

Determine time intervals for when your baby starts to cry. Start with a 5 minute interval. Each interval increases in length up to 10 minutes.

    • 4

Check on your baby at your set interval. Refrain from picking up your baby and comforting him. Reassure him verbally that he's okay.

    • 5

Leave the room. Increase your time interval and repeat Step 4 until your baby goes to sleep.

Tips & Warnings

  • Putting your baby to bed awake helps teach him to go to sleep on his own.

  • There is no magic number of days for how long it will take for your baby to soothe himself to sleep. Every child is different.

  • Set check times that are comfortable for you. Take into account when you started the Ferber method and how many times you check on your baby.

I've tried the method where the baby decides when to go to sleep and eat. I was reading his "cues"! It thoroughly exhusted both my baby and myself. He wasn't sleeping without being right on my chest! And he wasn't sleeping sound. I've got done with the ferber method and we are both happy! He's so much happier getting a full nights sleep and so am I! All I can say is this worked for us!
