If you've received a last-minute invitation to a party or simply forgot to buy a gift, you may need to shop at whatever store is open as you drive to the celebration. Consider these suggestions to make a gift bag that the recipient will never realize you've filled with goods from a gas station, drug store or supermarket.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go shopping for gifts at a gas station convenience mart while you're filling up your tank. Buy a selection of the person's favorite snacks or an inexpensive bottle of wine. Complete the gift bag by including handwritten coupons for a night out, a homemade dinner or services like a day of housecleaning or babysitting.

  2. Step 2

Visit a grocery store to fill a bag with romantic candy and flowers, the ingredients to make a favorite recipe and the promise to make the meal, or some delicious baked goods, pretty mugs and a bag of coffee. Most large-scale supermarkets also sell hardback books, toys, balloons and a selection of gift cards to restaurants, shops and music downloading gift cards.

  3. Step 3

Put a gift bag together with items sold at a drug store, like fragrant lotions and soaps, toys and baby supplies, art supplies or decorative trinkets. Consider the way you can group the last minute items to create a themed bag. Include a pretty picture frame, small photo album, acid-free pens to write captions and a coupon for free photo developing, for example.

  4. Step 4

Pull together a seasonal gift bag if you have time to visit more than one store. For example, celebrate summer with a bag that includes snacks and lemonade mix from the grocery store, along with a colorful beach towel, suntan lotion, sunglasses, magazines, plastic cups and straws from a drug store.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep a stack of plain gift bags in various colors on hand so you can choose one to match the occasion as you're heading out the door. Buy different sizes to hold everything from large items to small gift cards. Also stock up on tissue to fill the bags and pretty ribbon to tie them shut.
