A muskrat is a small semi-aquatic rodent that resemble a rat, but it has a flat tail and webbed back feet. They live in families and are primarily nocturnal. Muskrats feed on aquatic vegetation and small aquatic animals, such as mussels and crayfish. It isn't recommended to keep one as a pet; your best hope is to find it a home in its natural habitat.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Create a habitat for the muskrat to live in if captured or homeless. Muskrats live in or near water, in bank dens or lodges much like a beaver.
Step2
Place the food in the man-made habitat in the evenings. Muskrats eat aquatic vegetation such as cattails, lilies and plant stems, along with small aquatic animals like fish, snails, crayfish and mussels. Trying to feed the muskrat by hand is not suggested. Just put the food in and let the muskrat come and eat when it's ready.
Step3
Feed wild muskrats by providing resources that would be growing in it's natural habitat. Planting vegetation to grow, or transporting tadpoles or snails to kick start the environment naturally can help provide prolonged food supply.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have a wild animal in need, contact a rescue group in your area that is trained in taking care of and placing wild animals in safe environments. These groups can also help relocate muskrats if they are being a pest.
  • Most of the food muskrats enjoy can be found at your local pet store in the aquarium.
  • A muskrats is a wild animal and liable to bite you--keep this in mind when interacting with them.
