Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Take a shower and get dressed at the same time each morning. Freelance writers like to brag about working in their pajamas if they wish, but few people are at their productive best when slogging around the house in flannel pants and slippers.
Step2
Set daily, weekly and monthly writing goals. Even if you're disciplined enough to report to your desk at the same time each day, you can nickel and dime your time away unintentionally by daydreaming for several minutes at a time. Post your goals beside that window where your eyes wander, and drag your gaze back to your computer screen.
Step3
Include time in your schedule for networking with agents, editors and other writers. You can become isolated as a freelance writer when you spend all your time at your desk, and this depletes your well of creativity. You also miss leads and support when you don't network.
Step4
Use childcare services as appropriate for young children. It's fine to multi-task occasionally when your child is ill or school is closed, but you can't focus on your craft when you're being interrupted every 5 minutes for juice refills or potty assists.
Step5
Make time for the business end of your freelance writing. It would be ideal if freelance writers could devote 100 percent of their time towards research and writing, but you must also dedicate time to filing receipts and administrative task.
Step6
Organize your writing space at the end of each day. Your creative juices may ebb at the end of your workday, so use this time to make notes for tomorrow's head start.
