How to Choose a Family Friendly Apartment

When you're looking for a family friendly apartment, be sure to investigate the surrounding areas as well. You want to choose an area that's safe for your children to live and play. Consider more than the interior of the apartment and look at the entire neighborhood.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look at the outdoor amenities the apartment complex offers. Family apartments should provide play areas with plenty of playground equipment to entertain your children.

  2. Step 2

Discuss special programs the apartment management staff has in place. This could be anything from a DVD library to holiday celebrations for kids who live in the complex.

  3. Step 3

Ask about other families with kids who live in the same apartment complex. You want to make sure there are more than just one or two families so your kids don't feel isolated in their new home.

  4. Step 4

Find out where the schools are located and how your children will get back and forth between the apartment and the school. Find where the bus stop located and what neighborhoods would they walk through on their way back and forth.

  5. Step 5

Talk to other parents in the immediate area and find out what they like and dislike. Getting the input of others who are in the situation you're considering is invaluable for helping you choose the best family friendly apartment complex.

  6. Step 6

Check with the local police department regarding crime in the area you're considering moving into. While they won't release details, they can provide you with statistics that'll help you make an informed decision.

  7. Step 7

Call the local city office and find out about special events, such as parades, street fairs or carnivals that your kids would enjoy attending.

Tips & Warnings
  • Once you've determined a particular apartment complex is family friendly, review the safety of the building, the individual apartments, appliances and things like doors, windows and locks.
