Step 1
Pick the location for your control panel. It needs to be in a location that is protected by the alarm system itself, or else the entire system can be circumvented by intruders who gain access to the panel, and you will need to run your telephone, power and alarm cables to the panel.

Run your wires to the control panel. The panel will need to be connected to a phone line and a power source, and, unless you are using a wireless alarm system, the various alarm sensors and siren. How you run the wires to your panel depends on your location. If possible, run them through the rafters or through the roof of an unfinished basement, and then through the ceiling or floor.

Connect the wires to the control panel. You will need to consult your specific model's manual in order to determine the proper way to connect all the wiring. Be sure to turn off the fuse of the power source you are using before you handle any exposed power wire.

Mount the control panel. If you are putting the panel on drywall, you should drill through the drywall into your wall studs to mount the panel. You can cut a hole through the drywall behind the panel and run the wires through there.

Turn on your alarm system. You will now need to configure all the components, most likely using a dedicated keypad that you can acquire from your alarm system company.

Test your alarm system to ensure that it is working properly. Your alarm system will have a specific testing mode that you can use to do this.
