Step 1
Pamper your hair if it is damaged by the sun, chlorine or because of heavy styling and chemical treatments. As a general rule, both shampoo and conditioner for damaged hair should have at least one protein near the top of the list of ingredients. Unfortunately, this is one case when spending the extra money to purchase a salon product is the best bet to protect your already damaged hair.
-
Step 2
Pick protein shampoo if you have curly or kinky hair as well, as the protein content helps to close the cuticles and relax sometimes unruly curls. If you hair is generally healthy, pick a supermarket brand; however, purchase shampoos and conditioners with as much protein as possible.
-
Step 3
Read the ingredients carefully and pick shampoos which include a gentle cleanser which will not damage your hair. Almost every shampoo will include either gentle sodium lauryl sulfate, or the harsh yet less expensive ammonium lauryl sulfate. Even those with oily hair should select sodium lauryl sulfate to avoid unnecessary damage.
-
Step 4
Select shampoos and conditioners without sodium lauryl sulfate if you have damaged or dry hair. While it is generally considered mild for dry or damaged hair, it is a lathering agent which may further strip your hairs needed oils. In this case, purchase natural shampoos and conditioners which may not lather like you are used to, but will still clean your hair while protecting your locks.
-
Step 5
Look for shampoos and conditioners which contain vitamins and minerals as well as products with balanced pH. Vitamin, minerals and proper pH balance are key to keeping your hair and scalp healthy.
-
Step 6
Forget the popular believe that heavy conditioners are best, as heavy cream conditioners should never be used on a daily basis. While deep conditioning treatments are fine no more than once a week, it is important to select a product which you can use each and every day. When picking your conditioner, look at the texture of the product, selecting a light liquid which will not weight down and build-up in your hair.
