Step 1
Verify the scoring system the fantasy basketball league will use during the season. Each league has a slightly different scoring system, which can establish the ranking system you will use for the offline fantasy basketball draft. For example, some leagues only use a scoring system with points, rebounds, steals, assists and blocked shots as the scoring categories, while other leagues may include field goal percentage, free throw percentage and other random stats to determine the scoring system.
-
Step 2
Research what happened during the off season on each player's team. The players each team drafts and signs through free agency will influence each returning player's role on the team and by extension their fantasy scoring potential.
-
Step 3
Ascertain if there are rule changes that will benefit certain positions or players during the off season. For instance, the league may change the rules to allow play that is more physical, which will benefit centers and power forwards and diminish the role of outside players like point and shooting guards.
-
Step 4
Determine the age and contract status of the individual player. Players usually play the best from their late twenties to early thirties and then decline from that point on. You can verify this by checking the stats of retired players. Contract status is important because if a player is in the last year of their contract they tend to play better in order to ensure a new lucrative contract. Conversely, players that signed a new large contract may feel secure and their play can suffer.
-
Step 5
Rank the players for an offline fantasy basketball draft based on the factors in the previous 4 Steps. The number of players ranked will depend on the length and number of team in the draft. For example if there are ten teams and 10 rounds in the draft, then you will need to rank at least 100 players.
