When you're stuck inside the house on a rainy day, use the time creatively by planning an assortment of craft activities. In addition to keeping the kids entertained, you can use the art and projects they create as future gifts for loved ones, teachers and friends.

From Quick Guide: Crafts for Kids
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cardstock
  • Scissors
  • Paint
  • Marbles
  • Embellishments
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Buttons or beads
  • Blank cards
  • Patterned paper
  • Adhesives
  • Dimensional accents
  • Gift bags
  • Photos
  • Memorabilia
  • Markers
  1. Step 1

Cover your work surface with newspaper or butcher paper if the kids will be using paints, glue, markers or glitter on their projects. Dress the kids in play clothes or let them wear one of your old shirts to protect against messy hands and spills.

  2. Step 2

Create pretty bookmarks with cardstock. Let the kids generate cool textures by coating a few marbles with acrylic paint, then rolling them at different angles across the cardstock. Once the paint dries adorn the cardstock with stickers, rhinestones or self-adhesive foam shapes.

  3. Step 3

Layer different sizes and shades of buttons onto pipe cleaners to create button "flowers." Trim the "stems," then place several into a narrow vase. You can also slide pony beads onto pipe cleaners before bending them into shapes. Tie a loop of ribbon to the top to turn them into Christmas ornaments or window decorations.

  4. Step 4

Let the kids turn blank cards, scraps of patterned paper, stickers and dimensional accents like buttons, chipboard shapes and gems into "Thank You" notes or cards for their teachers and friends. Also give them a few plain gift bags to decorate for future gift giving.

  5. Step 5

Gather duplicate photos, extra pieces of memorabilia, like ticket stubs, brochures and postcards, cardstock, markers and simple embellishments like die cuts and stickers, and let the kids design their own scrapbook pages. Once they've adhered their photos, encourage them to journal their feelings and thoughts about the event directly onto the page.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use the rainy day craft sessions to reinforce educational concepts with younger children. If they're working with beads, for example, have them count, add or multiply them. Practice proper grammar, spelling and punctuation when writing the text for scrapbook pages. Discuss the colors, shapes and textures on stickers or other embellishments.
