How to Perform an Imbolc Ritual

The imbolc ritual is one of the eight wiccan sabbats and is celebrated on February 2 in celebration of the Celtic fire goddess Brigid. Also known as candlemas, imbolc is a time of rebirth and cleansing in preparation of the end of winter. While specific rites and incantations should be written or organized for your specific practice, a few tips can give you an idea how to perform the ritual.

Instructions

    • 1

Cast a magic circle outside in any means you find appropriate; however, make sure that you burn a candle in each of the four directions. If you are performing the ritual in a group, you can simple cast a circle by joining hands. Set a small cauldron in the snow if there happens to be snow in the center of the circle or on an alter. If there is no snow, surround the cauldron with ice.

    • 2

Place incense powder, bricks or cones inside of the cauldron and then recite an incantation to call the Gods. Again, your invocation should be personal and self-written.

    • 3

Burn the incense and meditate on the smoke, imagining the Gods being reborn within the smoke to brink light and energy to the Earth, to cleanse your circle and wrap you with blessings.

    • 4

Remain silent for a few minutes, meditating and then take a moment to allow each individual in the circle to recite a blessing. Blessings should include thanks for that which passed in the year behind as well as hopes for the year to come.

    • 5

Recite a poem or prayer in thanks to the Gods for their presence during the ritual and in life in general and then close your circle.
