In 19th century America, the cotillion was a formal dance party where young people danced and got to know each other under the watchful eyes of adults. Many people enjoy cotillions today as an opportunity to dance the formal steps of yesterday or practice etiquette. You can set up a successful cotillion in a few steps.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decorate the hall the night before with streamers, flowers, table decorations and other items you have prepared. Include static features of the room such as mirrors or side tables, but not doors to service areas. Remember to decorate the cloak room and rest rooms with a special addition, perhaps a spray of dried flowers. These touches create the magic of the cotillion as a special event.

  2. Step 2

Arrange the furniture next. In addition to creating a large open rectangle for dancing, group chairs together for those who wish to rest and watch the dancers. Spread tablecloths on the tables at which food or drink will be served.

  3. Step 3

Adjust the temperature 3 or 4 degrees cooler than normal an hour before the cotillion begins. At the same time, lay out the silverware, napkins, plates and other prepared items.

  4. Step 4

Stack dance cards near the entrance to make it easy to give them out to girls as they enter. If pencils are not included with the cards, lay them out at the same place. Finally, turn on all the lights and await the arrival of your guests.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never block a doorway, which may become a critical exit in case of a fire or other emergency.
