Bike paths and trails have become very popular with children, teens and adults. People enjoy all types of activities, using the bike path for walking, jogging, bicycling and roller-skating. Follow the guidelines for path and trail etiquette to create a safer and more enjoyable experience.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Acknowledge that the bike path or trail is there for the use of everyone. Be courteous and respectful of other users, regardless of their speed and level of skill.

  2. Step 2

Keep a consistent speed and be prepared to step off if necessary. Be cautious when passing and keep to the right on the trail.

  3. Step 3

Do not block the trail if you are in a group or walking your pets. Be sure to use no more than half the trail so you don't interfere with the flow of others coming from the other direction.

  4. Step 4

Pass others that are going in the same direction as you on their left. Yield when you approach slower and on-coming traffic.

  5. Step 5

Use hand signals to alert others of your moves. To indicate a left turn, extend your entire left arm. To indicate a right turn, extend your left arm, but this time bend it at the elbow with your hand pointing upwards. Look ahead and behind, making sure it is safe to pass and turn.

  6. Step 6

Stop by gradually slowing down and moving off the trail or path. Be aware of others approaching from behind, and make sure they know you are pulling over.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember to use lights at night.
  • Bring plenty of water to avoid dehydration.
  • Do not wear headsets on the trail you will not be able to hear warning signs or other people on the trail.
