Getting healthy has been made easier in recent years thanks to the popularity of fitness monitors. This tool reads a number of factors in your body as you exercise and helps tell you if you are hitting your goals, burning enough calories and keeping your heart rate up. While the internal workings of fitness monitors are complicated machines, operating one is relatively easy and can add a lot to your workout.

  1. Step 1

    Choose among the many fitness monitor options. Some act simply as calorie counters and heart rate monitors, while others help measure body fat and track arm and leg strength. Go to your local fitness store and inspect all the available models, as many will have monitors you can test out.

  2. Step 2

    Decide how you will workout with your monitor. A cardiovascular workout is advisable as it helps build a strong heart rate and burns many calories. This is also a workout that can be monitored with any fitness monitor.

  3. Step 3

    Attach the heart rate monitor. Different models offer different versions of the heart rate reader. Most are attached either to the wrist like a bracelet or clipped to the shirt. However, there are several different variations available.

  4. Step 4

    Enter your personal information if you purchased a more advanced fitness monitor. Depending on the model, you will be asked to input information such as your birth date, weight, target heart rate, target calorie burn and target distance to run.

  5. Step 5

    Read your monitor as you exercise. Based on your goals the fitness monitor will help you see how you are exercising. If you are running too hard and running a higher heart rate, you can adjust. Additionally if you are far from your desired calorie count, you can properly adjust. The fitness monitor gives a readout of your entire body during a workout.
