One of the most popular running gags in the "Calvin and Hobbes" comic strip was the favorite game of the title characters, called Calvinball. If you hate playing organized sports with set rules, getting assigned positions and having the same object of the game every time, Calvinball is the game for you.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Miscellaneous sports equipment
  • A wild imagination
  1. Step 1

Gather all the sporting equipment you have in your home. Soccer balls, volleyballs, hockey sticks, croquet mallets--anything used in sports can and will be used in this game.

  2. Step 2

Have all the players put on bandanna-style face masks (like the kind train robbers or Zorro wear). If anyone asks why they should do this, tell them they're not allowed to ask about the face masks.

  3. Step 3

Grab one of the balls first and declare it the Calvinball. The largest ball available should work best. Once you have it, think up and declare the first rule or objective of the game.

  4. Step 4

Continue making up new rules and objectives as the game goes on. Find any way to incorporate every piece of equipment you have into the game somehow. You'll probably want to think up something you know you can accomplish.

  5. Step 5

Get your opponents to do something embarrassing to themselves, like recite poems, drop water on their heads or spin until they fall over. Watch out--they can always tun it back on you with their own rules!

  6. Step 6

Keep score however you want to. You can even use letters and nonsense words instead of just numbers to keep track of points.

Tips & Warnings
  • There is only one permanent rule in Calvinball. You can't play it the same way twice.
