From Quick Guide: Planting Specialty Gardens
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Existing or new trees or shrubs
  • Building materials to build a shade producing structure
  • Mulch
  • Plants that provide shade
  1. Step 1

Look around the area in which you would like to plant your flowers and see if there are any available trees or shrubs. Trees and shrubs provide great shade for plants, especially evergreens. If you don't have any trees or shrubs, and don't wish to plant any, consider building a flower garden against one side of your fence, house or garage. The building will provide shade through part of the day.

  2. Step 2

Build shade for your flower garden if you can't find any that is readily available. You can build a trellis or an arbor from wooden posts and lattice panels, for example. Find an attractive climbing plant that produces flowers and allow it to grow up the lattice to provide shade for the flowers beneath.

  3. Step 3

Improve the soil in the flower garden after you choose the place for it. Loosen the soil and add some compost, mulch or rotting leaves. Mix to aerate the soil. After you plant your plants, add a layer of mulch on the ground to hold moisture in the dirt and keep it cool. When the soil high quality, shade loving plants can tolerate a little bit more sun than usual.

  4. Step 4

Plant some large plants with broad leaves, such as the Canna. Place smaller plants around the bases of the larger plants. The broad leaves of the large plants will provide some shade for the small plants.
