Vomiting is a common occurrence in dogs. Dogs may vomit because they have eaten too much food, or because they have eaten a non-food object, such as a ball or a bone. Dogs can also have cases of vomiting due to illness such as parvovirus or diabetes. In most instances, a dog owner can treat their dog's vomiting at home by following a few steps.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Withhold food from your dog for 12 to 24 four hours after your dog first vomits. This will allow your dog's stomach to rest and heal.

  2. Step 2

Keep your dog's blood sugar levels in check. While you withhold food from your vomiting dog, your dog can experience hypoglycemia or low blood sugar. To prevent this from happening, rub a small amount of a sugary fluid such as honey, karo syrup, maple syrup or sugar water on your dog's gums. Repeat this every several hours.

  3. Step 3

Give your dog a small amount of water. This helps keep your dog hydrated. You may allow your dog to drink a small amount of water at a time, or you may offer your dog several ice cubes to eat. Remember not to give your dog too much water at a time because too much water can cause your dog to vomit again.

  4. Step 4

Feed your dog bland, soft foods after the twelth house of fasting. Some suggested foods include pasta, rice, cooked chicken breast, boiled hamburger meat, potatoes and cottage cheese. Feed your dog only a few ounces of food at a time. If four hours pass after your dog has had a few ounces of food, and your dog has not vomited again, you may feed your dog another slightly larger meal of these same foods. Continue this for at least 12 more hours.

  5. Step 5

Treat your vomiting dog with medication, if recommended by your dog's veterinarian. In some cases of dog vomiting, medications such as Pepto-Bismol or antacids can help your dog heal. Talk to your dog's veterinarian before giving any medication to your vomiting dog.

Tips & Warnings
  • Contact your dog's veterinarian immediately if your dog vomits blood, appears to be in pain, acts weak and lethargic, has a fever or does not improve after 24 to 48 hours.
