Instructions

    • 1

Try to find where the yarn ends. You will probably have to cut a bit to get the end free, or even remove collars and cuffs from clothing items.

    • 2

Unravel the yarn carefully, undoing seams as you go. Often crocheted or knitted items are made of various pieces of knitted or crocheted material, knitted or crocheted together. Try not to cut these seams, or you may cut into the rest of the item, thereby making many shorter lengths of yarn.

    • 3

Wind the yard on the back of a chair or on a piece of cardboard, if you want to wash it. If you aren't going to wash the yarn, you can go ahead and wind it tightly on an empty paper towel tube or in a ball.

    • 4

Tie the hanks of yarn in a few places to wash them. They won't tangle if you do this. If you have wool yarn, wash it in cold water. On the other hand, if you have acrylic yarn, wash it in warm water. Always wash yarn by hand and let it drip dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider washing the item and allowing it to dry before unraveling it, so that you don't have to wash the hank of yarn.

  • Don't wring out wet yarn. It will straighten better if you let it hang to dry.

  • Don't try to knit with kinked yarn, as this will cause uneven stitches.
