How to Prepare for College

As the old saying goes, "Failure to prepare is preparing to fail." This is never more evident that when it comes to college preparation. The competition for a college education is increasing each year and if a person does not start early then college may be nothing but a pipedream.

      Identify the list of possible college choices. You first need to figure out what colleges you would like attend. These colleges should offer a curriculum that best suits your scholastic needs.

      Check the specific entrance requirements for each college you hope to attend. Each college has its own set of required classes you need to complete before it will accept you for admittance. It is important to start this process prior to the start of your junior year in high school.

      Take the SAT or ACT as soon as possible. Most colleges require that a new student take one of these tests and achieve a minimum score to gain acceptance to the school. You can take these tests as often as you want, time permitting of course, until you achieve the necessary score.

      Rank your college choices in order of preference. This way you can concentrate on your top choice but also keep the others in mind in case you cannot attend your first choice.

      Visit each college on your list to determine if the campus atmosphere, teachers, support staff and location is the correct choice to further your education. The first hand experience of a college visit will allow you to get a better idea of what each college has to offer and it is the right place for you.

      Apply for admittance to the colleges as soon as the university allows. The sooner you apply, the sooner you will know if you got into the college. This way you can start looking for education alternatives if you need to.
